The Partners in Heart and Health (PHH) and Medical Associates Hospital (MAH) Stroke Training Summit was held from July 22-24, 2024, at the Medical Associates Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. This event, aimed at optimizing stroke care and preparing for the World Stroke Organization (WSO) Stroke Certification, brought together key medical professionals and stakeholders to improve stroke recognition, treatment pathways, and public awareness.

Day 1:
The summit began with a welcome by Ms. Toni Cooke, followed by presentations on current practices at Medical Associates Hospital (MAH) and updates from the Jamaica Stroke Alliance.
Dr. Sheila Martins provided insights into the WSO Stroke Certification pathways, while Dr. Gillian Gordon Perue and Nurse Karelle Spence led discussions on stroke awareness, alert workflows, and team roles.
A tour of MAH showcased the stroke patient journey and facilitated discussions on stroke alerts.
Day 2:
The second day featured parallel tracks for physicians and nurses. Topics included stroke recognition, thrombolysis decision-making, acute medical management of stroke, patient selection for mechanical thrombectomy, and post-treatment care.
Key speakers included Dr. Gordon Perue, Dr. Ryna Then, and Dr. Violiza Inoa, who emphasized practical skills through mock stroke alerts and assessments.
Day 3:
The final day featured replays of key sessions from Day 1 and Day 2 to reinforce learning
The summit successfully advanced the national conversation around stroke care in Jamaica and prepared the PHH/MAH team for the WSO Stroke Certification process.
